Maira Kalman

I love Maira Kalman's art because she is inspired by the things and people she encounters in her every day life. If you happen to be in NYC from March 11, 2011 - July 31, 2011, please make sure to visit her exhibition, Maira Kalman: Various Illuminations (of a Crazy World).

Things I Love Thursday!

1. Urdhva Dhanurasana (aka upward bow or wheel pose) - I used to hate doing backbends in yoga class. My arms were always so wobbly and my back was totally inflexible when I attempted the pose. Within the last 2 years or so of my yoga practice, mostly by teaching myself, studying Yoga Journal's podcasts and having patience with myself...I can now honestly say that I love doing backbends! After coming out of a backbend, I feel so uplifted and full of new life because I've opened up my shoulders, heart and chest.

2. I have sensitive skin and very rarely venture out and try new skincare. I stick to the basics: Cetaphil face wash, Cetaphil moisturizer, Clinique Superbalanced Foundation. Maybe it's all the Youtube makeup videos I've been watching but I purchased this Missah BB Cream on a whim and I love it. It does have a slight fragrance but so far, I haven't had any reaction to it and a little bit goes a long way. I mostly use it for my undereye circles since I do find the product to a bit on the oily side and it keeps my eyes well moisturized. All in all, a good do it all makeup base to have in my arsenal.

3. Oh Pete Burns, you are the man! This video makes me laugh, dance and sing along whenever I watch it.

A Sketch A Day Keeps the Doctor Away...

I used to sketch for fun but now-a-days it seems like I can never find the time for it. The process of sketching slowed me down, forced me to sit down and take pencil to paper, quieted the voice of my nasty inner-critic and made me open my eyes and appreciate the people and things around me. Mental note to self: Sketch. Sketch anything! Once a day.

Things I love Thursday...

1. Cholula Hot Suace (chili garlic flavor): I am a lover of all things spicy. I have a bottle of this Cholula Hot Sauce stashed in my drawer at work. When I want to add some kick to my brown bagged lunches, this hot sauce hits the spot. I also love mixing a couple of tablespoons of the sauce with sliced sweet potatoes, and baking them in the oven to create delicious and savory fries.

 2. High-waisted shorts: I am so happy that high-waisted bottoms are back. I love this inspiring Spring look from Dace's lookbook. I've said this before and I'll say it again, I can't wait for the warmer weather to arrive.

3. To end on a sweet note...I love these Navita Cocoa nibs. Yummy and good for you too!

TGIF! Thank goodness it's a three-day weekend. Enjoy!

Spring and Dear Creatures

I bought this lovely top from Dear Creatures to celebrate Spring's imminent arrival. I believe this sweater was inspired by Anna Karina, one of my favorite French actresses and style inspirations.

Happy Valentine's Day

Remember to love yourself first!

Things I love Thursday

1. Pre-code Hollywood Movies
I'm a sucker for old Hollywood movies. Pre-code movies were made in the 1930's and are pretty risque and scandalous even for our modern times. I have been hibernating this winter and watching old movies on the weekends. I thoroughly enjoyed "Rain" with Joan Crawford and "The Divorcee" with Norma Shear.

2. Music by the band Celebration
Celebration makes beautiful, dreamy music. I would love to see them live in 2011. You can download some of their music "gratis" via their website. I highly recommend them!

3.Lindt Lindor Truffles Peanut Butter Milk Chocolate with Smooth Peanut Butter Filling
Oh my goodness...these chocolate balls filled with creamy peanut butter are pretty delicious. If you feel like indulging a bit, please feel free! Pssst...Valentine's Day is this Monday. :)

Do It Yourself in the new year...

Last weekend, I finally found a place that sold metallic spray paints and decided to get my craft on. As promised several months ago, I am finally posting a picture of one of the items I spray painted. I bought this old cat statue  at some antique market on Bowery. I remember paying $20 for him and carrying the 20 pound thing back home on the subway with me. Although, I loved his gray and weathered appearance and his black goth eyeliner, I decided to give him some color for the new year. Tah-dah!

This is definitely a DO!

Henry Allen Gold Piggy Bank, $190
Ever since I spotted Harry Allen's golden piggy bank in a feature about interior designer Rita Konig's apartment, in the now defunct but beloved Lucky Magazine, I have been obsessed with it. Despite many attempts to save enough pennies to buy said pig, the frugal side of me continually resisted the urge to fork over two "Benjamins" for it.
Rita Konig's apartment. Look at the pretty piggie on the mantel.
But alas, I discovered this super inspiring diy blog called P.S. - I Made This by Erica Domesek.  In her super easy and clever tutorial, she describes how to transform old boring items that you may have lying around in your house into metallic wonders worth drooling over.

As soon as I find out where to buy metallic spray paint in NYC, I am so doing this! Get ready to see a plethora of before and after pictures.

Things I Love Right Now...

  1. Matcha Green Tea
  2.  Zoya's Amminah's nail polish - such a pretty basic color with a slight iridescence. It's so pretty and a change from winter's dark polishes. It certainly makes manicures at home quick and painless.
  3. Holga photography (4EVah!)
  4. Yoga (immersing myself in the texts and the asanas)
  5. Charlotte Gainsbourg + Beck:

Holga how i love thee

I have a bad habit of not finishing a roll of film promptly and waiting to develop it years later. I finally developed the film in my Holga camera (there were only 12 shots but these photos are 1.5 years old) and these were the surprising results. Sometimes, it feels good to look back and not remember, where you were or what you were doing.

There are some really amazing color Holgas located at this Holga Flickr group.

I think it's time to take out the color film.

Eco Totes

Eco Bags To Die For...
Eco Bags To Die For... by girlio on Polyvore.com

Lately, I've become reacquainted with several things I love to do: shopping and sewing. Though sewing doesn't come easily to me, shopping does. Since Spring has arrived, I have been looking forward to all the fresh produce that will be available at the Farmer's Market. The shopping totes pictured above are so cute. I decided to abstain from buying a bag and make my own since I had a ton of ripstop fabric (no pics at this time since my sewing skills need some serious practice). This helpful and inspiring video about making your own bag can be found here:

I have made several and plan to make some more for friends and family. Once you get the hang of making the simple tote in the video, you can easily start to customize your own bag to your preferences.
